About Nahant

Nahant is the smallest municipality in the state of Massachusetts with a land mass of one square mile. “Nahant” was a term used by the Native Americans that meant “the point” or “almost an island” to describe this tied island that juts out into Massachusetts Bay. The town is small enough to not have any major routes, highways or interstates to run through it.

A primarily residential town of nearly 4,000 residents, Nahant’s points of interest include its ten beaches, The Northeastern University Marine Science Center, the Nahant Historical Society Museum and 40 Steps, the 40 wooden steps that lead down to one of the beaches. The NU Marine Science Center was also the filming location for some of the movie “Shutter Island.”
